MY ADVENTURE WITH DIY CONCRETE FOUNDATIONS

Even the best concrete won’t save you if water’s pooling up against the slab or crawlspace.

Couldn’t agree more—site prep is everything. I’ve dealt with that sticky clay too, and it’s a nightmare for drainage. Bringing in gravel might feel like overkill, but I’d rather overdo it than see cracks a year later. And yeah, those roll-on waterproofers are mostly a temporary patch in my experience. You nailed it—every site has its own quirks, and sometimes you don’t really know what’ll happen until the first big rain comes through.

Man, you’re not kidding about the surprises after a big rain. I remember thinking I’d done everything right—gravel, compacted soil, the works. Then a freak storm hit and suddenly I had a moat around my crawlspace. Ended up digging a French drain by flashlight at midnight. It’s wild how much you learn by just doing it yourself. Honestly, even when things go sideways, there’s something satisfying about figuring it out as you go. You’re right—overkill on prep beats regrets later.

Had a similar “learning moment” when I tried to build a detached garage foundation. Thought I’d nailed the drainage setup, but after a week of steady rain, water was pooling right where it shouldn’t. Ended up calling in a buddy who’s big into landscaping—he swears by double-layered drain tile. Ever try that? Sometimes I wonder if there’s such a thing as too much prep, but then again, soggy concrete is a nightmare...

Man, I hear you on the drainage headaches. I once thought a single French drain would do the trick for a small studio slab—nope. Ended up jackhammering out a section to add more tile. Honestly, I’d rather overdo it than risk water creeping in later. But yeah, sometimes it feels like you’re prepping for a monsoon when all you get is drizzle.

Yeah, I get wanting to go overboard with prep—water’s a pain once it finds a way in. But honestly, sometimes folks go wild with drains and membranes when just sloping the grade away does most of the heavy lifting. I’ve seen people spend days on vapor barriers and still miss the basics. If you’re sweating the small stuff, just double-check your slope and compaction...that’s where most of the trouble starts anyway.
