NEED ADVICE ON REPLACING AN OLD LEAKY ROOF

- Love the practical approach, but have you thought about using reclaimed or FSC-certified decking if you do need to replace a bunch? Old wood’s got charm, but new sustainable stuff can be surprisingly good (and less likely to harbor mystery mold).
- If you’re already opening things up, maybe check the insulation situation? Swapping in some recycled-content batts or even a radiant barrier could save you headaches (and cash) down the road.
- Totally agree on not getting too sentimental about damaged wood. I tried to “save” some on my last project and ended up with a musty attic smell for months... lesson learned.
- Debris is no joke. I’ve seen folks rent a chipper for old sheathing—messy, but it cuts down on landfill waste if your area allows it.
- Curious—are you considering cool roof shingles or metal? They’re pricier upfront but can really help with summer heat. Just a thought if you’re already going through all this effort.

You’re on the right track thinking long-term here. I’ve seen people get stuck chasing old wood nostalgia and it rarely pays off—agree with the musty attic comment above, that stuff lingers. FSC-certified or reclaimed materials are a solid call if you want some character without the headaches. As for insulation, it’s one of those “while you’re in there” upgrades that’s easy to regret skipping later. Cool roofs are worth considering if you’re in a hot climate, but sometimes the upfront cost doesn’t pencil out unless you’re planning to stay a while. Good luck—sounds like you’re making smart choices.

You’re making solid calls here. I’d second the insulation upgrade—did mine during a reroof and my energy bills dropped noticeably. Not sure I’d go all-in on reclaimed materials unless you’ve got a reliable source, but FSC is a safe bet. Cool roofs are nice, but yeah, only if you’re planning to stick around for a while. Good luck, sounds like you’re thinking it through.

Upgrading insulation during a reroof was one of those “why didn’t I do this sooner” moments for me, too. I actually tried using some reclaimed slate tiles once—looked amazing, but tracking down enough good ones was a headache. If you’re set on reclaimed, just budget extra time. Otherwise, new FSC stuff is way less hassle.

Upgrading insulation’s a smart move—pays off in the long run, no question. Reclaimed slate does look great, but yeah, sourcing enough decent ones can drag out the timeline. If you’re after less hassle and tighter deadlines, just go new. Either way, you’re making the right call fixing that roof.
