NEED ADVICE ON REPLACING AN OLD LEAKY ROOF

Funny you mention those attic dead zones—ran into something similar with a split-level last spring. Even with textbook venting, there were pockets that just wouldn’t breathe. It’s wild how much the roof shape can mess things up. I’m with you on shingle color too... lighter shades definitely seem to help with heat, at least in my experience. Sometimes you’ve gotta tweak the plan after you see how things play out in real life.

Yeah, those weird attic zones are a pain. I’ve seen “premium” roofers swear their venting solves everything, but it’s rarely that simple. Honestly, I think people overrate shingle color—sure, lighter helps a bit, but insulation and airflow matter way more in the long run.

You’re spot on about airflow and insulation being key. I’ve seen plenty of jobs where folks just slap on lighter shingles and call it a day, but if the attic’s not vented right, you’ll still have heat and moisture issues. Those odd attic corners can be tricky—sometimes you need a mix of ridge, soffit, and even gable vents to get it right. Don’t let anyone tell you there’s a magic bullet. It’s all about the details and making sure everything works together.

That’s exactly what I ran into last year. I thought just swapping out shingles would fix my leaks, but turns out my attic had almost zero ventilation. Ended up adding a couple gable vents and it made a huge difference. Didn’t expect it to matter so much, honestly.

You nailed it—ventilation gets overlooked all the time. I’ve seen folks spend a fortune on new shingles, only to have the same issues crop up because the attic can’t breathe. It’s wild how much difference a couple of vents can make. Did you notice any change in your energy bills after adding them? Sometimes the attic temp drops enough to help with cooling costs, too. Just curious if you saw that side benefit.
