Passive ridge and soffit venting is usually fine if your intake and exhaust are balanced and there’s no insulation blocking airflow. I’ve measured attic temps before and passive setups tend to keep things within 10–15 degrees of outside air, even in hot climates. Powered fans can actually pull conditioned air from the house if the attic isn’t sealed tight, which can backfire on cooling bills. As for critters, metal mesh over soffits is a must—plastic just doesn’t cut it for squirrels.

NEED ADVICE ON REPLACING AN OLD LEAKY ROOF

I’ve been down this road a few times, and honestly, I’d take a well-balanced passive vent setup over powered fans any day—unless you’re dealing with some wild humidity issues. Powered fans sound fancy, but they can end up sucking your AC right out of the house if your attic isn’t sealed up like Fort Knox. That’s a quick way to watch your cooling bills climb.

Totally agree on the metal mesh for soffits. Squirrels are basically tiny demolition crews with tails. I tried plastic mesh once—lasted about a week before I heard the pitter-patter of little feet overhead. Lesson learned.

One thing I’d add: if you’re replacing the roof anyway, double-check that your insulation isn’t blocking those soffit vents. It’s amazing how often that gets overlooked, and it really messes with airflow. A little attention there saves a lot of headaches (and money) down the line.

Couldn’t agree more—powered fans are just another thing to break, and they’ll eat into your wallet over time. I’d rather spend that money on better insulation or upgraded shingles. Also, totally with you on the metal mesh. Those squirrels will chew through anything if you give them half a chance... learned that the hard way last winter.

One thing I’d add: don’t skimp on drip edge. It’s cheap insurance against water damage, and a lot of roofers try to skip it to save time. Not worth it in the long run.

- Totally hear you on the powered fans—my neighbor put one in and ended up with higher cooling bills and a fried motor after two summers.
- Insulation seems like a smarter spend, but is it really that much better than just thicker shingles?
- Drip edge—didn’t even know what that was until last year. My first roofer tried skipping it, then I found rot around the eaves... lesson learned.
- Anyone have thoughts on those “lifetime” shingles? They sound good, but I’m skeptical anything on a roof lasts forever.
- Squirrels: 1, me: 0. Those little guys are relentless.

Insulation over powered fans any day—learned that the hard way after chasing attic temps with gadgets instead of just sealing up the gaps and adding cellulose. The difference in comfort (and bills) was night and day. Thicker shingles don’t really do much for heat transfer, honestly. Most of the heat comes through the roof deck, not the shingle itself. Insulation is where you get real bang for your buck.

Drip edge is one of those things you don’t notice until it’s missing... and then you REALLY notice. Had a similar rot situation a few years back. Now I double-check every time.

“Lifetime” shingles always make me laugh a bit. Lifetime of what? The shingle? The house? The company? I’ve seen them curl and crack after 15 years if the attic’s not vented right or there’s moisture issues. They’re better than the old 3-tabs, but nothing’s truly forever up there.

And squirrels... yeah, they’re basically tiny demolition crews. I’ve surrendered and just keep patching the soffits.
