Trimming Down Expenses On Project Supplies

Bedsheets are a solid hack, especially for furniture. I do like to keep a few canvas drop cloths around, though—they’re reusable and handle spills better than sheets. If you’re dealing with anything messy (like ceiling paint), you can always layer an old shower curtain underneath. Not the prettiest setup, but it works in a pinch. Funny how the “good enough” solutions end up sticking around the longest...

I get the appeal of sheets and shower curtains—cheap, easy to find, and you don’t mind if they get trashed. But honestly, in the long run, I’ve found investing in commercial-grade drop cloths saves more. They’re tougher, last forever, and you’re not constantly replacing them. Sometimes “good enough” costs more over time... just my two cents.

- Couldn’t agree more on the drop cloths. I used to grab whatever was cheap, but after a few jobs where sheets tore or bunched up, I switched over.
- Commercial-grade stuff just handles the abuse—paint, mud, even heavy foot traffic.
- Upfront cost stings a bit, but you’re not tossing them every few months. That adds up.
- One thing I’ll add: sometimes you can score used canvas tarps from rental places for a steal. They’re already broken in and still tough as nails.
- I get the “good enough” mindset, but for me, reliable gear means less stress and fewer mid-project runs to the store... which is priceless.

That’s a good point about used tarps—never thought to check rental spots. I’m usually all about the cheapest option, but I’ve had those cheap plastic sheets split on me mid-job too many times. Spending a bit more upfront does seem smarter in the long run.

Yeah, I’ve tried going the dirt-cheap route with tarps and plastic too. Ended up with a shredded mess after the first rain. I started buying sturdier, reusable drop cloths instead—costs more up front, but they last ages. Plus, less waste, which is a bonus.
