TRIMMING DOWN EXPENSES ON PROJECT SUPPLIES

Funny thing, I’ve actually swung the other way on this after a few too many “just-in-case” purchases. I get the pain of running out mid-project, but I’ve found that being super intentional—almost obsessive—about planning and measuring has saved me more than keeping extras around. Maybe it’s the luxury projects talking, but when you’re dealing with custom finishes or imported hardware, overbuying can get real expensive, real fast. I’d rather risk a quick supply run than have $500 worth of Italian hinges gathering dust... though I’ll admit, there’s always that one time you wish you had an extra. It’s a balancing act for sure.

I totally get where you’re coming from. When we started our build, I went overboard with “just in case” extras—boxes of tile, random plumbing bits, even a couple of fancy light fixtures. Ended up returning half of it or selling on Facebook Marketplace. Now I triple-check my measurements and try to buy only what I know I’ll use. Still, there was that one time the paint color didn’t match because I ran out... lesson learned: always double up on custom-mixed paint, but not much else. It’s a weird line to walk, honestly.

Funny you mention the paint—I've had that exact issue with flooring. Measured twice, still ended up a box short because of a weird corner cut. Do you ever factor in a percentage for waste, or just buy exact amounts and hope for the best?

Honestly, I’ve always wondered if buying extra “just in case” is really worth it when you’re trying to keep costs low. I get the logic behind factoring in waste—those weird corners or angles always seem to throw things off—but sometimes I feel like stores push the overbuying thing a bit too much. I usually try to buy as close to the exact amount as possible and then just get creative with any leftovers or odd spots. Worst case, I can run back for a small box or can later, right?

Have you ever ended up with way too much leftover because you bought for waste and then everything fit perfectly? I’ve got half a gallon of paint and two boxes of tile just sitting in my garage now... feels like money down the drain. Maybe there’s a happy medium, but I’m still figuring it out.

- I hear you on the leftover supplies. I usually calculate about 10% over for tile, especially with tricky layouts, but sometimes it’s just too much.
- Paint’s even trickier—manufacturers recommend extra for touch-ups, but half a gallon is a lot. I’ve started using online calculators and double-checking room measurements to get as close as possible.
- Have you tried returning unopened boxes or cans? Some stores take them back, which helps a bit.
- Curious—do you ever plan projects around using up leftovers, or do they just pile up?
