Haha, reading your story brought back some chilly memories—had a similar experience last winter and ended up working in gloves for half the day. Totally agree about FSC; it's easy to confuse sustainability certifications with emission standards when you're just starting out.

One thing I'd add from my experience: suppliers aren't always consistent with how clearly they label compliance info on their websites or product sheets. Sometimes you'll see "CARB compliant," but they won't specify if it's Phase 1 or Phase 2. I've found it helpful to directly request the documentation or certification number. It might seem a bit picky at first, but it saves time (and headaches) down the road.

Also, don't overlook smaller local suppliers. I initially assumed they'd be pricier, but occasionally they've surprised me with competitive pricing, especially when factoring in shipping costs from bigger distributors.

Anyway, sounds like you're already doing your homework—hope everything goes smoothly!

Had a similar revelation myself—ended up chatting with a local lumberyard owner who gave me a mini-lesson on sourcing sustainably. Sometimes those personal connections pay off in unexpected ways...

Had a similar experience recently when I switched from a big-box store to a local hardware place for some specialty fasteners. Not only did they have exactly what I needed, but the owner also pointed out a cheaper alternative that worked just as well. Sometimes the smaller shops have more flexibility or insider knowledge that can save you money in the long run.

Curious if anyone's found certain types of supplies consistently cheaper at local places versus larger suppliers? I've noticed lumber and hardware can vary quite a bit, but haven't really tested it with plumbing or electrical components yet...

I've found plumbing fittings can actually be cheaper at local places sometimes. Electrical stuff though... not so much. Big-box stores usually have better bulk pricing there. Still, never hurts to check—sometimes you get lucky.

I've noticed the same thing with plumbing supplies—local places sometimes surprise you. Electrical though, yeah, big-box usually wins out for me too. But I'm wondering if anyone's had luck with online suppliers for electrical stuff? I've browsed a few sites but shipping always seems to kill the savings. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places... Has anyone found online deals that genuinely beat out local bulk pricing, even after shipping?
