MAKING THE SWITCH TO WATER-SAVING TOILETS: WORTH IT?

I’ve put these in a bunch of homes, including my own, and honestly, the newer models are way better than they used to be. That said, I’ve seen some cheaper ones struggle with older plumbing—definitely pays to check if your system can handle it. The dual-flush thing is great, but I’ve had a few clients complain about the buttons being confusing, especially for guests. Still, the water savings add up over time, even if they’re not dramatic month to month. Just make sure you’re not sacrificing too much on flush power, or you might end up flushing twice... kind of defeats the purpose.

I just went through this in my new build, and here’s how it played out for me. First, I totally get the “flush power” concern.

That’s exactly what I was worried about. I tested a few at the showroom (yes, I’m that person) and honestly, some of the cheaper ones felt like they’d struggle with anything more than a tissue.

Here’s what worked for me:
1. Check your plumbing age. If your house is older, you might need to upgrade a few pipes or at least check for clogs before switching.
2. Don’t cheap out. The mid-range models seem to hit the sweet spot—good flush, not too confusing, and still save water.
3. Dual-flush is cool, but yeah, my parents still ask which button to press every time they visit. Maybe stick a little sticker on it if you have guests a lot.

Bottom line, I’m seeing a small drop in my water bill, but honestly, it’s more about feeling less guilty every time I flush. Worth it for me, but definitely test before you buy if you can.

I get the eco-guilt thing, but honestly, I’m not fully sold yet. We swapped out two toilets last year (mid-range, supposedly “powerful” flush) and while the water bill dipped a bit, the double-flush problem is real. And not just for guests—my teenager manages to clog it way more than our old one ever did. Maybe I just got unlucky with the model, but sometimes old-school reliability wins out for me. Anyone else find the “savings” aren’t quite as dramatic as advertised?

I hear you on the double-flush struggle—ran into that myself after a remodel. I picked a “high-efficiency” model thinking it’d be a win, but my kids treat it like a challenge to see how much it can handle. Honestly, the water bill savings were there, but not mind-blowing. Sometimes I miss the old tank’s brute force... but I guess it’s a trade-off between saving water and plunging more often.

- Dual-flush models can be hit or miss—some brands just don’t clear as well, especially with kids in the mix.
- Water savings add up over time, but yeah, it’s not always dramatic on the bill.
- Have you tried adjusting the flush valve or tweaking the fill level? Sometimes a small tweak helps with the “brute force” issue.
- Curious if anyone’s found a model that balances efficiency and power... or is it always a compromise?
