Making The Switch To Water-Saving Toilets: Worth It?
I get the water bill thing, but honestly, I’m not convinced these dual-flush toilets are always worth it. We put one in our new place and yeah, it saves water, but sometimes I have to flush twice anyway. Kinda defeats the purpose, right? Maybe it’s just ours, but I feel like the old-school ones were more reliable for, uh... bigger jobs.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that too. We swapped out a bunch in a mid-rise project last year, and honestly, had to field a few complaints about “double flushing.” The water savings look good on paper, but if you’re flushing twice, is it really saving? Old-school tanks might just be less fussy for some folks.

That’s been my experience too. I put in a dual-flush model during a bathroom reno at my last place, thinking I was doing the eco-friendly thing. It worked fine for “liquids,” but anything more... yeah, double flush almost every time. My wife started joking that we were just using “half the water, twice as often.”
Funny thing is, when I built my workshop out back, I went with an older-style tank I found at a salvage yard—just to save some cash. That thing never needed a second flush, even with heavy use after BBQ nights. Makes you wonder if the new stuff is always better.
I get why codes are pushing for low-flow, but sometimes it feels like we’re trading one problem for another. Maybe there’s a sweet spot with certain brands or models? Haven’t found it yet myself.
- I get the frustration with double flushing, but honestly, our Toto low-flow has been solid—no second flushes needed so far.
- Maybe it’s a brand thing? Some of the cheaper models at my old apartment were pretty useless, but this one’s been a workhorse.
- Not saying it’s perfect for everyone, but I think tech has improved a lot since those early “eco” toilets.
- The water bill drop was actually noticeable for us... might be worth trying a higher-end model if you’re still on the fence.
- Still, I do miss the old-school “whoosh” sometimes—those things could handle anything.
I’ve heard Toto gets a lot of praise, but I’m still a bit wary—some of the “luxury” brands I’ve tried haven’t lived up to the hype. Has anyone noticed any difference in maintenance or repairs with these newer models? I’m curious if the savings on water ever get offset by extra service calls...
