"maybe we're missing out on some genuinely great lenders just because they're not tech-savvy or don't prioritize digital marketing."
That's a great observation. I've seen similar situations in green building projects—some of the best experts I've worked with barely have an online footprint. Definitely worth looking beyond the website sometimes...
Good point about the green building experts—I’ve noticed the same in land development. Some of the most reliable lenders I’ve worked with were old-school types who relied mostly on word-of-mouth. Sometimes a quick call or coffee chat tells you way more than Google ever could...
I've had similar experiences. When I was financing my last property, the lender I ended up trusting most wasn't the one with the slickest website or highest ratings online—it was someone recommended by a colleague. A face-to-face conversation really clarified things for me...

Totally agree. Websites and reviews are useful, but nothing beats sitting down and asking direct questions. Also helps to ask about their experience with green or sustainable projects specifically—I've found lenders familiar with those tend to be more transparent overall.
Good points—though I'd add a couple more things to look for:
- Ask directly about past projects similar to yours (size, scope, sustainability goals...).
- Request references from previous clients; talking to them can reveal a lot.
- Trust your gut—if something feels off, it probably is.
