Keeping subs on track without losing your mind
Totally get what you mean about being present. I’ve found that just walking the site and chatting with folks keeps things moving way better than any threat or sign.
It’s not always easy, but it pays off.“Sometimes just showing up and being present keeps folks on their toes more than any sign or text ever will.”
- Walking the site definitely helps, I’ve noticed subs pay more attention when they know you’re actually engaged.
- Sometimes I wonder if being too present can make folks nervous, though… ever feel like it backfires and slows things down?
- I try to balance check-ins with giving people space, especially when we’re pushing for green certifications - details matter, but trust does too.
Totally get what you mean about being too present. I’ve had subs freeze up when I’m hovering, like they’re waiting for me to point out every little thing. But if I don’t show up enough, stuff gets missed - especially with all the green cert hoops. It’s a weird dance. I usually just pop in, ask a couple questions, then let them do their thing. Seems to work better than standing over their shoulder the whole time.

That’s pretty much my approach too, but I’ll admit I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to finishes. If I don’t check in at the right moments, suddenly there’s a crooked tile or someone’s using the wrong caulk and it’s a redo. But yeah, if you hover too much, they get nervous and start second-guessing everything. It’s like herding cats - except the cats are holding power tools. There’s definitely an art to knowing when to step in and when to just let them roll.
Honestly, I get the whole “don’t hover” thing, but if I’m paying for labor and materials, I want to be sure it’s done right the first time. Fixing mistakes costs more than just a little awkwardness checking in. Isn’t it better to risk being a bit annoying than paying twice? Maybe there’s a balance, but I’d rather ask too many questions up front than deal with surprise charges later. Anyone else feel like subs sometimes cut corners if you’re not watching?
