WHEN YOU THINK YOU KNOW BETTER THAN YOUR LAWYER
Man, I totally get this. I tried to handle a zoning thing myself last year because I figured, how complicated could it be to put up a little shed? Spoiler: way more complicated than I thought. I spent hours reading city codes and still ended up missing some weird setback rule. Ended up having to pay a fine and redo the whole permit application anyway. The money I “saved” by not hiring someone who actually knew what they were doing? Yeah, that vanished pretty quick.
I get wanting to save cash—lawyers aren’t cheap, and sometimes it feels like you’re just paying for someone to fill out forms. But after that mess, I realized there’s a reason they charge what they do. It’s not just about knowing the law, it’s about knowing how to talk to the people at city hall, too. I swear, half the time I called, I’d get a different answer depending on who picked up the phone. Super frustrating.
I do think some of the rules are overkill, though. Like, does it really matter if my shed is 18 feet from the fence instead of 20? But I guess if they let everyone fudge the rules, it’d be chaos. Still, I wish there was a way to make the process less confusing for regular folks. Maybe if the city had a “plain English” version of the code or something, more people could handle it themselves without getting tripped up.
Anyway, after that experience, I’m way more willing to pay for help when it comes to legal stuff. Sometimes you just gotta admit you’re out of your depth and let the pros handle it.

That’s the part that always gets me too. I get why there are codes, but sometimes it feels like they’re just making it harder for people to do simple projects. I ran into something similar when I tried to add a rainwater collection system—turns out there’s a whole maze of rules for that too. Ever wonder if cities actually want people to build greener or if they just want to keep things complicated?
