Sink fixtures driving me nuts lately

Funny thing, I actually went with matte black in my own kitchen after swearing I’d never do it for clients—just wanted something different. Yeah, the fingerprints are real, but I kind of like the lived-in look? Maybe I’m weird. Brushed nickel is definitely easier, but I get bored with “safe” choices. As for those eco fixtures, I had a touchless one that lasted all of six months before it started ghost-activating at 3am... Sometimes chasing innovation just means more headaches.

MATTE BLACK VS. BRUSHED NICKEL: IS “SAFE” REALLY BORING?

I get the appeal of matte black—definitely makes a statement, and I’ve seen it look sharp in the right space. But I keep circling back to brushed nickel or even chrome for one reason: long-term maintenance. In my experience, especially in high-traffic kitchens, those “safe” finishes just hold up better over time. Maybe it’s not as exciting, but when you’re dealing with multiple units or rentals, practicality wins out.

About the touchless fixtures... I hear you on the ghost-activating. Had one in a model home that would randomly turn on if someone walked by with a metal watch. Drove me nuts. I wonder if we’re just not quite there yet tech-wise for residential use? Or maybe it’s about picking brands that have really nailed the sensor tech.

Curious—has anyone tried those hybrid manual/touchless faucets? Seems like a possible middle ground, but I haven’t tested one myself yet.

I get where you’re coming from on the “safe” finishes, but honestly, I’ve had the opposite experience with brushed nickel in my last place. Maybe it was just the brand or water quality, but I felt like I was constantly wiping off fingerprints and water spots. Matte black actually hid a lot of that for me, and I didn’t notice any more scratches than usual. I guess it depends on how much you care about the little marks versus the overall look.

On the tech side, those touchless faucets are cool in theory, but I’m with you—too many weird activations. I tried one of those hybrid ones at my cousin’s house (Delta, I think?) and it was actually pretty decent. You could use it like a regular faucet if you wanted, but the sensor worked when your hands were messy. Didn’t seem to go off randomly, but I only used it for a weekend, so who knows long-term.

For rentals or multiple units, I totally get sticking with what’s reliable and easy to clean. But if you’re on a tight budget, sometimes the “trendier” finishes are on sale because they’re less popular with landlords. That’s how I ended up with matte black in my last kitchen reno—saved a chunk compared to chrome or nickel. Not sure how it’ll look in five years, but for now it’s holding up.

Guess there’s no perfect answer. Just depends what bugs you more: cleaning spots or seeing the same old finish everywhere.

Funny, I actually had the opposite experience with matte black. We put it in our new kitchen because it looked so good in the showroom, and yeah, it hides fingerprints, but I swear every little water spot just sits there and mocks me until I wipe it down. Maybe it’s just our hard water? I do love how different it looks compared to the usual chrome or nickel, but sometimes I wonder if I traded one cleaning hassle for another.

About the touchless faucets—totally get the appeal, but my partner’s parents have one and it’s like a haunted house sometimes. Random bursts of water when you least expect it. I think the hybrid ones might be better, but honestly, I’m kinda old school and just want something that works every time.

I guess at the end of the day, you’re right—there’s no perfect answer. But I’d probably go back to brushed nickel next time, even if it means wiping fingerprints more often. At least I know what to expect.

You’re not alone—every finish seems to have its own annoying quirk. I went with brushed nickel last time for the same reason: at least I know what I’m dealing with. Matte black looks great but yeah, water spots are relentless, especially if you’ve got hard water. Touchless faucets sound cool in theory, but I’ve never trusted them either... too many stories about accidental showers. Sometimes simple really is better, even if it means a little extra wiping.
