I hear you on the balance thing. I mean, I love a bit of honest wear, but I’ve seen folks let things go way too far—like, when a “patina” turns into actual damage, that’s not character, that’s just poor upkeep. Still, there’s something to be said for not sweating every scratch. I always wonder if we’re just trained to want things to look brand new forever, even though real life doesn’t work like that. Your method sounds solid, by the way—simple, gentle, nothing fancy. The vinegar tip is great, but yeah, some surfaces really hate acid... learned that the hard way with a marble slab once. Anyway, congrats on the new counters. They’re meant to be used, not just admired.

Funny you mention the vinegar thing—I did the same with a limestone backsplash once. Thought I was being clever, but it left these weird dull spots that never really went away. I get what you mean about the “patina” vs. just plain neglect. There’s a sweet spot, right? I like a bit of lived-in look, but when it starts to look like a construction site, that’s where I draw the line. Sometimes I wonder if we’re all just chasing that showroom vibe because of what we see online, but honestly, a kitchen’s gotta feel like home, not a museum.

That “sweet spot” is tricky. Do you think certain materials just handle wear better? I’ve seen quartz hold up, but natural stone always seems to show every little thing. Curious if you picked your counters based on durability or just the look.

Honestly, I think durability gets overhyped sometimes. I went with recycled glass for my counters—yeah, it’s not as bulletproof as quartz, but it’s held up surprisingly well and has a ton of character. Sure, you get the odd scratch or chip, but I actually like how it ages. Plus, it’s way more eco-friendly than most options. Sometimes the “lived-in” look just feels right, especially if you’re not aiming for that showroom vibe.

I get where you’re coming from. I did concrete counters in my last place—definitely not the most durable, but I liked how they picked up little marks and stains over time. Gave the kitchen some personality, you know? I get why people want low-maintenance, but sometimes a bit of wear just adds to the story of the space. Not everything needs to look untouched.
