Totally get the appeal of a “lived-in” kitchen—there’s something kind of comforting about a space that looks like it’s got stories to tell. But, I’ll admit, when it comes to counters, I’m in the low-maintenance camp most days. Here’s how I see it:

-

“nobody ever walks into a house and says, ‘Wow, I wish these counters had more knife scars.’”

True, but I’ve definitely heard people say they love that “patina” or “character,” especially in older homes. It’s like jeans with intentional rips—some folks really dig it.

- For me, quartz wins on practicality. No sealing, no worrying about wine stains or lemon juice disasters. Just wipe and go. Maybe that’s boring, but sometimes boring is good when you’re cleaning up after dinner at 10pm.

- That said, there’s a sustainability angle too. Some reclaimed wood or recycled material counters come pre-weathered and are actually more eco-friendly than new stone or resin slabs. If you don’t mind the quirks (and maybe some extra maintenance), you can get a unique look and keep stuff out of the landfill.

- Random side note: my neighbor has soapstone counters covered in nicks and scratches, but she swears by them. She says every mark reminds her of a meal or family get-together. I guess it depends if you want your kitchen to be a memory scrapbook or just easy to clean.

- At the end of the day, it’s all about what fits your vibe and how much effort you want to put in. Some people love the look of “well-loved,” others want everything spotless and new.

I’ll admit, part of me wishes I could relax about scratches and stains...but then I remember how much I hate scrubbing!
