Honestly, I get the resale worry, but I think we sometimes overestimate how much buyers care about “playing it safe.” Here’s my take:
- Most folks want a house that feels lived-in, not a showroom. A little personality can actually help people picture themselves there.
- I’ve done a few DIY renos where I took risks—painted cabinets, funky tile—and when it came time to sell, those touches were what got people talking (in a good way).
- Sure, if you go super niche, you might narrow your buyer pool. But unless you’re painting everything neon green, most choices aren’t dealbreakers.
- At the end of the day, you’re the one living there. If you love it, that’s worth something too.
I’d say don’t stress too much about “rules.” A bit of character goes a long way.
