That’s pretty much the trick—open shelves can work, but only if you’re realistic about maintenance. I’ve seen people put rarely-used platters up there and then wonder why they’re grimy. For reclaimed wood, sealing is non-negotiable. I’d add: check the seal every year or so, especially near sinks. As for recycled glass, it’s gorgeous but yeah, durability’s a concern. I’ve seen a few counters with spider cracks from dropped pans... looks cool, but not for the heavy-handed.
