Choosing Plants and Trees for Your Climate

I've been thinking about this lately—like imagine if your yard got basically no direct sunlight, maybe because of buildings or big trees or whatever. Mine's not quite that bad, but it's pretty dark back there, you know? I'm curious what people would even plant in that kinda scenario. Ferns? Moss? Mushrooms? I mean, could you even make it look good, or would you just accept that it's gonna be a gloomy little jungle back there?
