I hear you on the “potential” trap—been there, lost weekends to it. Here’s how I usually decide:

- If it’s solid wood and the lines are unique, I’ll push through, even if it means a few extra weekends. Old growth lumber is just too good to waste.
- But if I start realizing I’m basically rebuilding the whole thing, I’ll strip it for parts and move on. No shame in calling it.
- Smell is a dealbreaker for me too. Mold or weird chemical funk? Not worth the risk or the headache.

Honestly, sometimes I think the sunk cost fallacy gets us all. I’ve had projects where I spent more time and resources than if I’d just built from scratch with reclaimed materials. Ever find yourself weighing the environmental impact of tossing something versus the energy and supplies you burn trying to save it? That’s where I get stuck—sometimes it feels like a toss-up between sustainability and sanity...

That balance between sustainability and sanity is tricky. I’ve definitely had moments where I’m halfway through sanding something old and wonder if I’m actually making a difference or just making more work for myself. Do you ever factor in the emotional attachment to a piece—like, does the story or history behind it ever tip the scales for you? Sometimes I feel like that matters as much as the environmental side, but maybe that’s just me overthinking it...
