WEEKEND CRAFTS: DO YOU PREFER BUILDING FROM SCRATCH OR UPCYCLING OLD STUFF?

I’m right there with you on the satisfaction of going all-in with reclaimed wood. There’s a certain integrity to seeing a piece through without sneaking in new lumber, even if it means fighting warped boards and mystery nail holes. I’ve done a few projects where every single component was salvaged, and honestly, the end result just feels more substantial—like it has a story baked into every joint.

That said, I do think there’s a practical side to mixing in new material, especially for structural elements. Some reclaimed wood just isn’t up to the task, no matter how much you want it to be. I’ve had old beams that looked gorgeous but were so riddled with dry rot or insect damage that I wouldn’t trust them to hold up a shelf, let alone a bench someone might actually sit on. In those cases, I’ll reinforce with steel brackets or even sandwich the old wood around a hidden modern core. Not exactly “pure” upcycling, but it keeps the look authentic while making sure nobody ends up on the floor.

Hidden brackets and dowels are great, but they can be tricky if the wood’s already compromised. I’ve had better luck with pocket screws and epoxy in some cases—especially when you’re dealing with splits that just won’t clamp shut. It’s not always pretty behind the scenes, but if you’re careful about placement, nobody ever sees it.

I get the environmental angle too, and I try to minimize new purchases as much as possible. But sometimes safety and longevity have to win out. There’s nothing sustainable about a project that falls apart after a year or two.

Curious if anyone else has tried laminating thinner reclaimed boards together for strength? It’s a bit of extra work, but you can get some really solid panels out of scraps that would otherwise be firewood. Just takes patience—and a lot of clamps.
