WEEKEND CRAFTS: DO YOU PREFER BUILDING FROM SCRATCH OR UPCYCLING OLD STUFF?

- You nailed it about the unpredictability of upcycling—sometimes those imperfections actually make the piece more interesting.
- I get what you mean about function, though. There’s a fine line between “quirky character” and “wobbly shelf that dumps your books.”
- In my experience, the extra effort with upcycling can pay off, but only if you’re okay with a bit of trial and error. Sometimes you just want something that works, no drama.
- Honestly, finding that balance you mentioned is key. Not every project needs to be a masterpiece, but it’s cool when you can pull off something unique that actually holds up.

I tried upcycling an old door into a coffee table once—looked cool, but man, getting it level was a pain. Ended up shimming one leg with a stack of washers. I get the appeal, but sometimes I just want to cut fresh lumber and know everything’s square.

I hear you on the leveling nightmare—old doors are never straight, and nothing kills my mood faster than chasing a wobbly table across the floor. I’m all for upcycling when it makes sense, but honestly, there’s something satisfying about starting with fresh, straight boards and knowing every joint will line up. Less “creative problem solving,” more actual building. That said, I do keep a stash of old hardware just in case inspiration (or guilt) strikes...

I get the appeal of upcycling, but after wrestling with a warped cabinet door for hours last month, I’m leaning toward new materials too. There’s only so much “character” I can handle before I just want things to fit together. Still, I can’t bring myself to toss old hinges... they might come in handy someday, right?

I hear you—sometimes “character” is just another word for a headache. Still, I’ve found that upcycling forces me to get creative in ways building from scratch never does. Plus, old hinges and hardware have saved my bacon more than once. Ever tried mixing new wood with old metal bits? Can look pretty cool, actually. What’s your threshold for when something’s worth saving versus starting fresh?
