WEEKEND CRAFTS: DO YOU PREFER BUILDING FROM SCRATCH OR UPCYCLING OLD STUFF?

That scavenger hunt feeling is honestly half the fun for me, even if it does mean a few wild goose chases around town. There’s something about stumbling on a weathered beam or an old door that gets my creative gears turning. I totally get the appeal of just grabbing fresh materials—sometimes you just want to get into the groove and not wait around for the “perfect” find.

I’ve got a pile in my garage right now that my partner calls “the wood graveyard.” It’s mostly offcuts and random bits I couldn’t leave behind, and every once in a while, one of those pieces ends up being exactly what I need. That said, there are days when I wish I’d just bought everything new and saved myself the trouble.

Guess it comes down to whether you’re in the mood for a project or an adventure. Both have their perks... but man, nothing beats telling someone their bookshelf used to be part of an old barn.

I’m still pretty new to all this, but honestly, I lean toward just buying what I need and getting started. The idea of hunting down old stuff sounds cool in theory, but after moving into our house, I realized how much time it actually takes. Half the time I’m just staring at a pile of “future projects” in the garage and wondering if I’ll ever get around to any of it.

That said, I did try upcycling once—turned an old ladder into a bookshelf. It was way more satisfying than I expected, even if it took me forever to sand off the paint and get rid of the weird smell. There’s definitely something special about giving old materials a new life, but sometimes you just want to finish a project before next year rolls around.

Guess for me it depends on how much patience I have that weekend... and whether my partner’s going to side-eye me for dragging home another “treasure.”

I get what you mean about the “future projects” pile... mine’s more like a graveyard at this point. But honestly, I’ve found upcycling isn’t always as time-consuming as it seems, especially if you keep things simple. Sometimes I’ll just pick one piece—like a busted chair or a drawer—and set a rule that I have to finish it in one weekend, no matter what. That way, it doesn’t feel like I’m signing up for a never-ending project.

Here’s a trick I use: before dragging anything home, I’ll sketch out what I want to do with it, even if it’s just a rough idea on my phone. If I can’t picture the end result, I leave it behind. Saves me from adding to the pile and keeps my partner from giving me that look.

Building from scratch is great for control, but there’s something about the quirks of old materials that makes a finished piece feel more personal. Plus, sometimes those “weird smells” are half the story... just maybe open a window next time.

- Totally relate to the “future projects” pile—mine’s more of a “maybe someday” museum.
- I lean toward upcycling, especially when I find something with character. Last month, I turned an old, battered side table into a luxe plant stand with marble contact paper and brass handles. It took a Saturday afternoon and honestly looks like something from a boutique.

Couldn’t agree more. The little dings and scratches tell a story you just can’t fake.

- That said, sometimes starting fresh is the only way to get exactly what you want—like when I needed a custom-sized bench for the entryway. No amount of thrift store hunting was gonna cut it.

- Pro tip: if you’re worried about weird smells or mystery stains, a coat of shellac works wonders... learned that one the hard way.

- For me, it’s all about mixing both approaches. Upcycling for soul, building from scratch for precision. Keeps things interesting and the house unique.

That “maybe someday” museum is way too real—mine’s starting to look like a thrift store annex. I’m with you on the upcycling front, though. There’s something satisfying about giving an old piece a second life, quirks and all. But I’ll admit, sometimes the only way to get a piece that actually fits your space (and doesn’t wobble) is to build it yourself. I’ve tried to force a few thrift finds to work, but at some point, you just have to break out the measuring tape and start from scratch. And yes, shellac is a lifesaver... learned that after a “vintage” dresser made my whole hallway smell like mothballs for a week.
