WEEKEND CRAFTS: DO YOU PREFER BUILDING FROM SCRATCH OR UPCYCLING OLD STUFF?
Yeah, I’ve run into that too—sometimes you think you’ve found a gem, but it’s just not structurally sound. I’m all for reusing old wood if it’s solid, especially for visible elements like mantels or trim where the character really shows. But for anything that needs to hold weight, I just don’t risk it anymore. There’s a point where the time spent patching and reinforcing outweighs any “cool factor” the old material brings. Sometimes new lumber just makes life easier... and safer.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I think we give up on old materials too fast. Yeah, sometimes it takes more work to reinforce or prep reclaimed wood, but the environmental impact of always buying new lumber adds up. I’ve had projects where a little extra effort made something way more unique and sustainable. Not saying it’s always easy, but I’d rather patch and reuse than send more trees to the mill every time.

Totally get that. When we moved into our place, I tried to build a bench for the entryway using some leftover fence boards from the previous owner. Took way longer than buying new, but honestly, every dent and knot tells a story. Not gonna lie, sometimes it’s frustrating dealing with warped boards, but I love how it turned out. It feels like it belongs here in a way store-bought stuff just doesn’t.

That’s the thing about using old materials—sometimes it’s a bit of a headache, but the end result just feels more personal. I’ve run into similar issues with reclaimed wood; sometimes you spend half the project just figuring out how to work around old nails or weird warps. But when it all comes together, there’s this sense that you’ve given something a new life.
Curious—do you find yourself planning projects around what materials you have on hand, or do you usually start with a design in mind and then hunt for the right pieces? I’ve done both, but honestly, some of my favorite builds started because I had an odd stack of lumber lying around. There’s something satisfying about making it work, even if it means improvising along the way. Ever had a project where the material itself totally changed your original plan?

I get the appeal of upcycling—there’s a cool story behind every piece, and it’s satisfying when it all works out. But honestly, I lean toward building from scratch, especially when I want things to fit just right. Sometimes fighting with warped boards or old hardware just eats up too much time for me. I like having total control over the design and dimensions, even if it means giving up a bit of that “character” you get from reclaimed stuff. That said, I’ve definitely had projects where I started with a plan and the material forced me to rethink everything... sometimes for the better, sometimes not so much.
