Weekend crafts: do you prefer building from scratch or upcycling old stuff?

Quick poll for the crafty folks lurking around here—when you get the urge to make something, do you usually start with raw materials (like, wood planks, fabric, etc.) or do you like to repurpose stuff you already have lying around? I always think I’m gonna be the person who builds a bookshelf from scratch, but then I see an old crate or busted chair and suddenly I’m all about “giving it new life,” lol. I guess both have their charm, but sometimes upcycling feels a bit more satisfying? Or maybe just less intimidating than measuring and cutting everything perfectly. Anyway, curious what everyone else tends to do. Do you have a go-to method or do you just wing it depending on what’s in your garage?

That’s the eternal question, right? I’ve had similar moments—spent more on brackets and wood filler than I would’ve on a new shelf. Still, upcycling keeps stuff out of the landfill, which is a win in my book. Pro tip: pre-drill everything with old wood, and if it splits, just call it “rustic charm.” Sometimes you just have to embrace the quirks.
