Weekend crafts: do you prefer building from scratch or upcycling old stuff?
WEEKEND CRAFTS: DO YOU PREFER BUILDING FROM SCRATCH OR UPCYCLING OLD STUFF?
I get the appeal of upcycling - there’s something cool about giving an old piece a new life, and you can’t beat the character. But I’ll admit, sometimes I just want things to fit perfectly or match a specific space, and that’s when building from scratch wins out for me. That said, I’ve definitely spent way too long trying to “fix” a thrifted chair that probably should’ve stayed in the donation pile... Guess it’s all about balance.
I totally get what you mean about balance. When we moved in, I was all about upcycling - thought it’d be fun and budget-friendly. But after spending two weekends sanding an old dresser that STILL doesn’t close right, I started leaning toward building new for certain things. Sometimes it’s just easier to start fresh, especially if you want it to fit a weird nook or match your style. Still, I can’t resist a good “before and after” project every now and then...

That’s been my experience too. I once tried to rehab an old armoire for our bedroom - looked great in photos, but the doors never quite lined up and it always smelled a bit musty no matter what I did. Ended up building a simple shelving unit from scratch for that spot. Way less hassle, and it actually fit the space. Still, there’s something satisfying about giving old stuff new life... when it works out.

I get where you’re coming from - sometimes starting from scratch just saves a ton of headaches. But I’ve found that a lot of those “problem” pieces (like musty armoires or wobbly drawers) can actually be rescued with the right approach. For musty smells, I’ve had luck with a combo of sanding, vinegar wipes, and leaving bowls of baking soda inside for a week or two. It’s not instant, but it usually helps.
As for doors not lining up, sometimes it’s just about adjusting the hinges or even swapping them out for new ones. I know it sounds like extra work, but there’s something cool about keeping the original character - especially if the piece has some history or unique details you can’t really replicate.
That said, if you’re after a super custom fit or a specific look, building from scratch is definitely more straightforward. I just like the challenge of making old things work... even if it means a few extra trips to the hardware store.

That’s a good point about the character of old pieces. When we moved in, I tried to salvage a battered bookshelf from the previous owners. It took way more time than I thought - lots of sanding, new screws, and I even had to learn how to fix a warped shelf with clamps and patience. In the end, it still leans a bit, but there’s something satisfying about seeing it in the living room. I get tempted by the idea of building from scratch for the “perfect” fit, but honestly, upcycling feels more rewarding... even if it’s not flawless.
