Privacy hedge or solid fence: which maintenance burden is easier to live with?

Winter privacy is where the hedge choice really matters. An evergreen isn’t automatically a good fit: compare its mature height and width, cold hardiness, and tolerance for the site’s sun and drainage. One that stays dense in those conditions is less likely to leave winter gaps, while a variety that grows well beyond 8 feet could need frequent pruning to keep the screen at the desired height.
