Drywall crack patterns that warrant a closer look

A drywall crack by itself doesn’t say much about what caused it. How do you weigh its location and pattern, whether it’s changing, and any nearby doors or windows that have started sticking or stopped latching normally?

For example, if a crack reappears along a taped joint, would that point you toward routine joint movement, or would its direction and nearby signs matter more? I’m also curious when it makes sense to document the crack and ask the builder to review it before patching, versus having a qualified professional assess it first.

A ruler in the photo can make the record more useful than a close-up alone: note the date and where the crack starts and ends, then take another photo from the same angle later. That gives a clearer comparison for whether it’s changed. I wouldn’t treat an unchanged photo as a reason to put off a review if there are other concerning signs, but it can help show why monitoring seems reasonable.
