Uneven flames at a gas fire pit

When flames weaken or look uneven, what observations help distinguish a few obstructed burner ports from a problem affecting the fuel supply or regulator?

Does the pattern differ between natural-gas and propane fire pits, or between a weak flame across the whole burner and one localized area? I’d also like to know what’s reasonable for an owner to observe, such as visible debris or recent exposure to windblown material, without taking the burner apart. At what point should the pit be shut off and left for a qualified technician?
