Open Shelves: Love-Hate Relationship

I hear you on the dust. Maybe it’s just my luck, but I swear the second I put something on an open shelf, it starts collecting a layer of fuzz. Doesn’t matter if I use it daily or not—my kitchen seems to be a magnet for it. I do think you’re right about open shelves being best for stuff you grab all the time, though. My coffee mugs and bowls get rotated enough that dust isn’t a huge issue there.

Mixing open and closed storage is definitely the sweet spot. I tried going all-in on open shelves once because it looked so good in photos, but in real life? It was a constant battle to keep things looking tidy, and I got tired of wiping down every plate and glass. Now I keep the “pretty” stuff behind doors and just a few essentials out. Also, I can’t be trusted with more than six mugs, so open shelves are a built-in limit for me too...
