Been there with the firmware updates... I had a similar headache when my budget-friendly smart plugs randomly reset after an update. Took me ages to reconfigure everything, and I learned the hard way that cheaper isn't always better. Now I stick mostly to mid-tier stuff like TP-Link Kasa—affordable enough without sacrificing reliability. Your approach with mainstream brands and simple automations sounds spot-on; balancing customization and stability is definitely key.

- TP-Link Kasa's decent, but I've had random disconnects even with their mid-tier stuff.
- Ever considered Zigbee or Z-Wave devices instead? Bit pricier upfront, but fewer firmware headaches overall.
- Curious if anyone's tried mixing ecosystems—worth the hassle or just asking for trouble...?

I've dabbled a bit in mixing Zigbee with some Wi-Fi devices (mostly Kasa and a few random bulbs), and honestly... it's doable but not exactly smooth sailing. The Zigbee stuff has been rock-solid for me, especially once I got a decent hub. But whenever there's a hiccup, troubleshooting can turn into a game of "which app did I set that up in again?" If you're patient and organized, it's manageable, but I'd lean towards sticking mostly to one ecosystem for sanity's sake.

I've had decent luck mixing ecosystems, but it definitely takes some patience. Right now I'm running mostly Z-Wave switches alongside a few Wi-Fi smart plugs and bulbs. It works fine day-to-day, but firmware updates or app changes can throw things off occasionally. Has anyone found a good central dashboard or app that makes managing multiple ecosystems easier? Would love to simplify things a bit...

I've been in a similar boat—running Z-Wave switches alongside some Wi-Fi bulbs and plugs. Initially, I tried juggling multiple apps, but it quickly became cumbersome. Eventually, I settled on Home Assistant running on a Raspberry Pi. There's definitely a learning curve, and setup took some patience, but now everything's centralized nicely. Firmware updates still occasionally cause hiccups, but overall it's simplified my daily routine considerably. Have you looked into Home Assistant yet?
