I've been thinking about similar setups lately, especially since we're planning an open-concept layout. Has anyone tried integrating AI-based camera systems instead? Curious how well they differentiate between pets and people, privacy concerns aside...

We went all-in on AI cameras last year—mainly because our dog kept triggering the old motion sensors. The newer systems are honestly impressive at telling the difference, though not flawless. Sometimes it thinks my golden retriever is a person if he’s standing on his hind legs (he’s weird like that). Privacy-wise, I get the concern, but most high-end brands let you keep footage local or set up strict access rules. For an open-concept space, the flexibility is hard to beat. I’d argue the convenience outweighs the rare false alert, but I’m picky about which brand I trust with my data.

Honestly, I’ve seen the same thing with my clients’ setups—AI cameras are leaps ahead, but still get tripped up by big dogs or even tall plants if the lighting’s weird. I do wish more brands made it easier to integrate with existing decor, though. Some of those cameras are just eyesores in a modern space. Privacy’s a dealbreaker for me too; local storage is non-negotiable.

I hear you on the design front—some of these cameras look like they belong in a warehouse, not a living room. I’ve had better luck with Eufy and Aqara for local storage, and they’re a bit less intrusive visually. Still, nothing’s perfect. I’ve seen folks get creative with placement, like tucking cams behind books or plants, but then you risk even more false triggers... trade-offs everywhere. Privacy-wise, local storage is a must for me too—cloud-only is a non-starter.

That’s exactly it—every workaround seems to introduce a new issue. I tried hiding a cam behind a vase once, and it kept picking up shadows from the window. Ended up with dozens of pointless alerts. For me, the sweet spot is mounting them just above eye level in corners—less obvious, but still functional. And yeah, local storage is non-negotiable. I don’t trust cloud-only setups either, especially after reading about some recent breaches.
