For me, the sweet spot is mounting them just above eye level in corners—less obvious, but still functional.
That’s actually my go-to as well. Tried the “hidden in plain sight” trick once, but all I got was a view of my cat’s tail and a ton of motion alerts. If you’re running local storage, I’d suggest running a backup power source too—learned that the hard way during a storm. Corners, eye level, SD card, UPS. Simple and solid.
I get the logic behind the UPS, but honestly, those things can get pricey fast. I’ve been tempted to just rely on cloud backup and hope for the best during outages... probably not the smartest, but my wallet’s happier. Anyone actually found a budget-friendly UPS that doesn’t sound like a jet engine?
- Totally get where you’re coming from—just moved into my first place and the UPS prices kinda shocked me.
- Looked at a few “silent” models, but even the so-called quiet ones hum a bit.
- Ended up grabbing a small APC unit for under $70. Doesn’t scream, but it’s definitely not totally silent either.
- Not sure cloud backup alone cuts it... had a short outage last month and my router went down, so no cloud until power came back. Guess it’s a tradeoff.

Yeah, that’s the tricky part—cloud’s only as good as your connection. I ran into the same thing during a storm. I started looking into solar-powered backup for my router and modem, just enough to keep the basics online. Not totally silent either, but at least it’s greener and doesn’t rely on the grid. Worth considering if you want a more resilient setup.
- Cloud backup’s great until the power or internet drops—been there, not fun.
- I’ve got a UPS for my networking gear, but it only lasts an hour or two. Solar’s interesting, but I’m not sure it’s practical for everyone, especially in apartments.
- Curious if anyone’s tried local storage solutions that sync to the cloud when things come back online? Seems like a solid middle ground.
- Also, with smart home stuff, I always wonder which ecosystems handle outages best. Some brands seem to keep more functions local than others... anyone notice a difference?
