Which Is Better For Controlling Everything: Voice Assistants Or Dedicated Touch Panels?

Sometimes the simplest setup is the most sustainable, but I’m curious if you’ve tracked any changes since automating.

I’ve wondered about this too—especially since moving into a house with all these “smart” gadgets. I can’t say I’ve noticed a huge difference in energy bills, but it’s tricky to tell what’s from automation and what’s just... me leaving lights on less often. I do like being able to double-check if everything’s off from my phone, but sometimes I feel like all the extra tech might be using more power behind the scenes.

Honestly, when the Wi-Fi drops, it’s kind of a reality check. Suddenly those touch panels or old-fashioned switches feel pretty reliable. I guess I’m still figuring out if the convenience outweighs the complexity. Maybe there’s a sweet spot—using automation for stuff that really needs it, and sticking with buttons for the basics. Anyone else feel like they’re in a constant tug-of-war between “fancy” and “functional”?

- I’ve noticed the same thing—when the internet hiccups, suddenly all the “smart” stuff feels a lot less smart.
- Voice assistants are great when my hands are full, but they’re not always reliable (especially with background noise or if I mumble).
- Touch panels look slick, but sometimes it’s just faster to hit a regular switch.
- I do like being able to check things remotely, but I wonder if all these always-on devices are actually saving energy or just shifting where the power goes.

Has anyone tried going back to basics after automating? Curious if you missed the tech or found it easier without.

I actually did a bit of a “tech detox” last year after my home network went down for a couple days. I’d gotten so used to barking orders at Alexa and tapping the wall panel for lights and music, but when the router died, it was like the house just shrugged and said “not my problem.” Ended up digging out the old light switches and manual thermostat, and honestly, it was kind of refreshing for a bit. No waiting for a voice assistant to mishear me three times in a row, no laggy touch panel, just click and done.

But after a week or so, I started missing the convenience, especially for stuff like setting scenes or checking if I left the garage open from upstairs. I guess I realized I like having the tech as a backup, but I don’t want to be totally dependent on it. Now I’ve got a mix—voice for when my hands are full (like carrying lumber or paint cans), touch panel for more complex stuff, and regular switches for quick on/off. It’s not as “futuristic” as I imagined, but it’s way less frustrating.

About the energy thing—yeah, I’ve wondered that too. All these always-on hubs and panels sipping power 24/7… I’m not convinced it’s a net savings, especially if you factor in the phantom loads. I did a little test with a Kill A Watt meter and was surprised how much juice the “smart” gear actually pulls just idling.

Honestly, I think the sweet spot is redundancy. If the internet goes out or the smart hub glitches, I want to be able to just flip a switch and not have to troubleshoot. Maybe that’s not as cool as full automation, but it’s a lot more reliable when you’re in the middle of a project and just want the lights to work.

I get the appeal of redundancy, but honestly, I find myself using the touch panels way less than I thought I would. For me, voice assistants are just faster—unless they glitch, which is rare in my setup. The touch panel feels like an extra step, especially when my hands are full or I’m in a rush. I get that switches are more reliable, but if the tech is set up right, I don’t really need to fall back on them much. Maybe it’s just a matter of getting used to the quirks, but I’d rather deal with a rare misheard command than walk across the room to poke at a screen.

I get where you’re coming from, but I actually lean the other way. Voice assistants are great when they work, but I’ve had enough “Sorry, I didn’t catch that” moments to make me appreciate a solid touch panel. There’s something about having a physical interface—especially for more complex scenes or when guests are over and don’t know your voice commands. Plus, touch panels just look slick on the wall. For me, reliability and that tactile control still win out, even if it means an extra step sometimes.
