BUILDER'S TIMELINE KEEPS SHIFTING—NORMAL OR RED FLAG?

You nailed it with the Tetris analogy—projects rarely go exactly as planned. I’ve seen timelines shift for reasons that make sense and some that don’t. As long as your builder’s communicating clearly, you’re probably fine. The real red flag is when the story keeps changing or you’re left in the dark. A little chaos is normal, but transparency is everything.

Totally agree—transparency’s the key. I’d just add, have you noticed if the reasons for delays are specific and make sense? Sometimes weather or permits really are legit, but vague excuses can mean trouble. Ever get a gut feeling something’s off?

I get where you’re coming from—sometimes delays are just part of the process, but when the reasons start sounding generic or recycled, I start to worry too. Have you noticed if the shifting timeline is affecting other trades or your own planning? I’ve had projects where one delay snowballed into others, and it was a nightmare to coordinate. Curious if it’s just isolated to the builder or if it’s impacting everyone else on site too...

Honestly, I wouldn’t jump to red flag just because the timeline keeps moving. Stuff happens—weather, permits, supply chain issues. But if the builder’s excuses start sounding like a broken record or they can’t give you specifics, that’s when I get suspicious. On my last build, the plumber and electrician were both waiting on framing for weeks, and it turned into a domino effect. If it’s just the builder dragging their feet while everyone else is ready to go, that’s a problem. But sometimes it really is just one hiccup after another... tough to tell without seeing how transparent they’re being.

This is spot on. Delays are pretty common, especially lately with all the supply chain weirdness and permit backlogs. I’ve seen projects where tile was stuck in customs for weeks, and it threw off everything else. But when a builder can’t tell you what’s actually holding things up, or keeps giving vague answers, that’s when I start to worry too.

Transparency really is key. If they’re open about what’s going on—even if it’s not great news—it usually means they’re on top of things. In my experience, the best builders are upfront about delays and keep you in the loop, even if it’s just to say “hey, we’re still waiting on X.” It’s frustrating, but not always a red flag unless you feel like you’re being left in the dark. Hang in there... these things almost never go exactly as planned.
