I’ve seen too many old roofs where felt just became a petri dish for mold after a minor leak went unnoticed.
You’re spot on about the mold risk—once it’s in, it’s tough to get out, and it can really wreck indoor air quality. The hybrid approach isn’t cheap, but you’re investing in the health of the whole house. I’ve seen clients regret cutting corners on underlayment more than once. Sometimes paying more upfront really does save headaches later.

I get that logic, but dang, the price tags on some of these hybrid underlayments make my wallet cry. I did a tear-off last summer and ended up splitting the difference: ice & water shield in the valleys and eaves, then a synthetic felt elsewhere. Haven’t had a leak yet, knock on wood. Anyone else try layering like that? It felt like a decent compromise without going full luxury-roof.
