Dimming’s still a bit hit or miss, though. Sometimes I just go old-school and use a regular dimmer switch for the main lights, then layer in smart accent bulbs for color. It’s not perfect, but it keeps the “vibe” on point.

That’s basically my setup too—main overheads on a traditional dimmer, then I let the smart bulbs handle the mood lighting. I tried going all-in with smart bulbs everywhere, but honestly, I got tired of yelling at Google to turn on the lights when someone flipped the wall switch off. It’s like, there’s a reason switches exist, right?

Mixing brands was a disaster for me. I had one bulb that always lagged behind the rest, so the “scene” would look totally off for a few seconds. Drove me nuts. I’ve found sticking to one brand (I use Hue for most things) helps with syncing and color matching. It’s pricier, but worth it if you’re picky about ambiance.

One thing I wish worked better is the “movie night” scene—sometimes the bulbs just refuse to cooperate and I end up sitting in the dark fiddling with the app. Not exactly the luxury experience I was going for... but when it works, it’s pretty fantastic.

Totally relate to this—my partner still uses the wall switch out of habit, so half the time I’m troubleshooting “smart” bulbs that are actually just powerless. I’ve started labeling switches, but it’s hit or miss. Also, with scenes, sometimes it feels like I’m running a light show at a concert... except I’m just trying to watch TV.

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from, but I think there’s a better way than just labeling switches. Have you looked into smart switches instead of just smart bulbs? That way, the wall switch still works like normal, but you can control it with your phone or voice too. I’ve put a few in for clients who had the same issue—no more “dead” bulbs when someone flips the switch. It’s a bit more work upfront, but it keeps things simple for everyone who just wants to use the wall. Scenes are cool, but sometimes you just want the lights on or off, right?

Yeah, I totally get wanting to keep things simple. I swapped out a couple of switches myself, and honestly, it made life easier for everyone in the house—no more confusion or weird workarounds. It’s a bit more effort upfront, but worth it for the everyday convenience.

I hear you on the upfront effort. I went the smart bulb route in my living room, and honestly, it’s been a mixed bag. The convenience is great—being able to dim the lights from the couch is a game changer—but sometimes the app acts up or someone flips the old switch and suddenly nothing works right. I’m starting to think swapping out the switches might’ve been the smarter move. Still, my kids love changing the colors for movie night, so maybe it’s worth the occasional hassle...
