Finally upgraded my living room lights - anyone else tried smart bulbs?
Funny you mention the dog thing - my experience was almost the opposite with our old mutt. He’s not exactly hyper, but he’s got a habit of wandering the house at night, and those motion sensors used to light up the living room like a runway at 2am. Woke me up more than once. I tried fiddling with the sensitivity, but I guess I never quite nailed it. Maybe I’m just not patient enough with the settings, or maybe our house’s layout just isn’t ideal for those sensors.
Ended up swapping them out for smart bulbs with schedules and voice control. For us, that’s been way less hassle. I set up a scene for movie nights - just a couple of clicks and the whole room dims down, no interruptions if the dog decides to do his rounds. I do miss the hands-off aspect of motion sensors sometimes, but with the bulbs, at least I know exactly when the lights will change.
I will say, though, it took me a while to get used to relying on an app or voice assistant instead of just flipping a switch. My partner still grumbles about it sometimes - old habits die hard. But overall, it’s been a solid upgrade. Maybe I’ll give the sensors another shot one day, but for now, I’m sticking with what works.
- Gotta say, I’m still a fan of motion sensors, even with pets around.
- Had similar issues at first - my cat would set them off constantly. Ended up repositioning the sensors higher and that solved most of it.
- I get the appeal of schedules, but sometimes I just want to walk in and have the lights pop on without thinking about it.
- Voice control’s cool, but I always forget the exact command... or my assistant mishears me and turns on the wrong room.
- Maybe worth giving sensors another shot down the line, especially if you can tweak placement or sensitivity. Sometimes it’s just trial and error with these setups.
Title: Finally Upgraded My Living Room Lights - Anyone Else Tried Smart Bulbs?
I relate to the motion sensor struggle, especially with pets. Had a similar situation - my dog would trip the sensor every time she walked by the hallway, so I ended up moving it higher and angling it a bit. That cut down on the false triggers a lot. I do think it’s worth tinkering with placement or sensitivity before giving up on them entirely. It’s not always a perfect science, but when it works, it feels pretty seamless.
Schedules are handy for sure, but I get what you mean about wanting lights to just react without having to plan ahead or remember commands. There’s something about walking into a room and having the lights just know you’re there. I’ve tried voice control too, but honestly, I find myself mumbling or forgetting the exact phrase half the time. Plus, my assistant seems to think “living room” and “bedroom” sound exactly the same.
One thing I’ve noticed is that some smart bulbs have built-in sensors or can integrate with other smart devices to make things smoother. It’s not always perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction. And from an energy perspective, having lights that only come on when you need them can make a real difference over time. That’s a big plus for me.
It’s definitely a bit of trial and error, and sometimes you have to live with a few quirks. But when you find that sweet spot - where the tech actually fits your routine - it’s pretty satisfying. Don’t get discouraged if it takes a few tries to dial it in.

Couldn’t agree more. When we moved in, I thought smart bulbs would just work out of the box, but it took a few weeks of adjusting settings and moving sensors around before things felt right. Our cat kept triggering the hallway lights at 3am... not ideal. Ended up lowering the sensitivity and now it’s mostly human-activated. Still get the occasional surprise, but honestly, it’s worth it for those moments when everything just clicks.
Honestly, I’ve found smart bulbs more hassle than they’re worth. The setup is always fiddly, and I still end up reaching for the wall switch half the time out of habit. Sometimes the “sweet spot” just feels like a moving target… especially when pets get involved.
