Yeah, that neutral wire thing tripped me up too. In my last place, the switches were ancient—no neutral in sight. Ended up having to fish a new wire through the wall, which was a pain but doable if you’re comfortable with a bit of drywall patching. Some newer smart switches claim to work without a neutral, but I’ve heard mixed reviews. Honestly, it’s one of those “hidden” headaches that doesn’t get mentioned until you’re halfway through the install. Don’t let it put you off, though—once it’s set up, it’s pretty slick.

I hear you on the neutral wire drama. My place is a 70s special—nothing’s ever straightforward. I chickened out on rewiring and just went with smart bulbs instead of switches. Not as fancy, but way less hassle (and drywall dust). They’re not perfect—sometimes the app’s a bit moody—but for the price, I’m happy enough. Plus, no patching holes in my walls, which is a win for my wallet and my sanity.

Totally get the drywall dread—my last place had ancient wiring too, and I just couldn’t face tearing into the walls. Smart bulbs seemed like the easy fix, but I do wish they’d play nicer with regular switches. Ever run into issues with people flipping the switch off and killing power to your bulbs? That’s been my main headache so far...

FINALLY UPGRADED MY LIVING ROOM LIGHTS—ANYONE ELSE TRIED SMART BULBS?

That switch problem is the classic smart bulb headache. At my last apartment, I swapped out every bulb in the living room, thinking I’d solved everything—until my partner kept flipping the wall switch out of habit. Suddenly, nothing worked. Had to keep reminding everyone that the switch had to stay on, which felt like fighting a losing battle.

Ended up installing these cheap little magnetic switch covers from the hardware store. Not exactly pretty, but at least they stopped people from killing the power every time they left the room. There are also “smart” switches that can control dumb bulbs or smart bulbs, but honestly, with old wiring, it’s not always worth the hassle or cost.

If you’re stuck with regular switches and can’t rewire, those covers or even a bit of tape as a reminder can help. Not elegant, but it beats losing control of your lights every time someone forgets...

Honestly, I get why people love smart bulbs, but I’m not convinced they’re worth the hassle. In a couple of my rental units, tenants kept calling about “broken” lights when it was just the switch issue. Ended up swapping back to regular LEDs. Sometimes old-school is just simpler, especially if you’ve got folks who aren’t techy or don’t want to mess with apps. Maybe I’m just old-fashioned, but all those workarounds feel like band-aids for a solution that’s not quite ready for prime time yet.
