Finally upgraded my living room lights - anyone else tried smart bulbs?
Had a similar experience with the color scenes - tried “energize” and it felt like I was in a fish tank. I agree, automations can get out of hand fast. I still keep a regular floor lamp plugged in, just in case the app decides to update itself at the worst possible time.
Title: Finally Upgraded My Living Room Lights - Anyone Else Tried Smart Bulbs?
- That “energize” mode is wild, right? I tried it for a client once and the room looked like a nightclub.
- Automations are cool, but I always recommend a manual override - old-school switch or lamp, just in case tech acts up.
- Pro tip: set up a basic scene with warm white as your default. Makes it feel less like you’re living in a sci-fi movie and more like, well, home.
- Honestly, sometimes I miss the simplicity of a dimmer knob...

- Couldn’t agree more on the manual override. I’ve had smart bulbs glitch out mid-renovation and it’s no fun stumbling around in the dark.
- “Energize” mode is a bit much for me - felt like my living room was prepping for a laser tag tournament.
- Warm white as default is solid advice. Tried the full color spectrum for a week... ended up feeling like I lived in a fish tank.
- Still keep a dimmer on one lamp, just for those evenings when you want simple and reliable. Sometimes old-school wins.
I get the appeal of manual overrides, but honestly, I’ve found a well-set up automation to be more reliable than expected. Backup switches are nice, but I rarely touch them these days. Maybe it’s just a matter of getting the routines dialed in…
I get where you’re coming from - automation’s come a long way, and when it works, it’s pretty seamless. Still, I’ve run into a few hiccups with routines not triggering if the Wi-Fi drops or if there’s a firmware update in the middle of the night. That’s when I’m glad I kept the manual switches in play.
- For me, redundancy is key. If the automation fails, I want to avoid fumbling around in the dark.
- I’ve noticed some smart bulbs don’t always play nice with older dimmer switches - had to swap a few out after some flickering issues.
- Curious if you’ve integrated your lights with any sensors? Motion or ambient light sensors can really take things up a notch, but sometimes they trigger at odd times.
How are you handling updates and network outages? Do you just trust the system, or do you have a fallback plan?
