Keeping the critters out: weird but effective tricks?

I’ve tried the peppermint oil trick after a neighbor swore by it - honestly, didn’t notice much difference. Maybe my mice have fancy tastes?

I hear you on the peppermint oil - never worked for me either. Steel wool’s great, especially for sealing up those tiny gaps. About the ultrasonic devices, I’ve read mixed things. Some people swear by them, but I’m skeptical. Have you checked for gaps around pipes or wiring? Sometimes that’s where they sneak in, no matter what gadgets you use. I wonder if anyone’s tried integrated pest management - combining physical barriers with habitat modification?

Funny, I actually tried one of those ultrasonic things when we first moved in - honestly, the mice seemed to treat it like background music. What finally worked for us was clearing out the overgrown shrubs right up against the house. Didn’t realize how much that stuff attracts critters. I get the appeal of gadgets, but sometimes it’s just old-school yard work that does the trick.

Yeah, I’ve had the same experience - those ultrasonic things just didn’t seem to faze anything around here. I’m with you on the landscaping. Once we trimmed back the ivy and kept mulch away from the foundation, the critter traffic dropped off big time. It’s wild how much of a difference just keeping things tidy can make. Gadgets are tempting, but sometimes it’s just about rolling up your sleeves.

I get the appeal of just tidying up, but I’m not totally convinced it’s always enough - especially in older homes. I’ve seen places where even with meticulous landscaping, critters still found their way in through tiny gaps or vents. Sometimes it takes a mix of strategies, like sealing up entry points or even changing up interior storage habits. Maybe it’s just the quirks of certain houses, but I wouldn’t write off gadgets entirely... though I agree, most of them are more hype than help.

I totally get what you mean about older homes - ours is new-ish, but even then, I swear the ants find secret tunnels or something. We tried the usual stuff, but honestly, sealing up every possible gap felt like a never-ending game of whack-a-mole. I’m curious, has anyone actually had luck with those ultrasonic plug-in things? I keep seeing them online, but they seem a little too good to be true. Or maybe there’s some weird trick I haven’t heard of yet...
