Way less glare, and you actually see where you’re walking instead of being blinded.

I totally get what you mean. I used to think brighter was better—my old place had those security lights that basically turned the whole garden into a football field. Switched to low-voltage path lights when we moved, and it’s like the space finally breathed. You notice the landscaping more, and there’s this calm vibe that just feels right. Too much light ruins the whole mood, honestly.

I hear you on the mood shift. I used to think more light meant more security, but honestly, those super-bright floodlights just made my electric bill skyrocket and didn’t really make me feel any safer. Swapping them out for lower wattage LEDs cut costs and made the yard way more inviting. Plus, I can actually see the stars again—kind of a win-win. Sometimes less is more, especially when you’re trying to keep things affordable and comfortable.

WHEN THE NIGHT SKY TURNS TO DAY: WHAT IF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD WAS LIT UP 24/7?

Funny, I’ve actually had clients ask for “as much light as possible” around their homes, thinking it’s the ultimate deterrent. But when you look at the data, there’s not a direct link between more lighting and less crime—sometimes it just creates more glare and dark shadows where people can hide. I swapped out my own backyard halogens for shielded LEDs on timers, and it’s wild how much more comfortable the space feels now. Ever notice how your eyes adjust better with softer, indirect light? Makes me wonder if we’re overdoing it with all these floodlights...

I get the urge to flood every corner with light, but honestly, I think we’re missing a chance to create atmosphere. Instead of blasting everything with harsh white bulbs, I like to layer in different types of lighting—think path lights, uplights on trees, maybe a few warm string lights. It’s less about “more” and more about “where and how.” Too much brightness just washes everything out and kills any sense of coziness. Sometimes less really is more, especially outside.

- Had a neighbor who put in those super-bright LEDs—felt like a stadium out there.
- Ended up closing my blinds every night just to sleep.
- Swapped my own lights for warmer bulbs and some solar path markers.
- Honestly, it made the yard feel way more inviting... plus I can actually see the stars again.
- Too much light just kills the vibe, in my opinion.
