Freshening up baseboards with that “one coat” paint—worth it?

FRESHENING UP BASEBOARDS WITH THAT “ONE COAT” PAINT—WORTH IT?

I hear you on the lighting—nothing like sunlight streaming in to highlight every little flaw. Has anyone tried those stain-blocking primers before using the “one coat” stuff? I’ve had mixed luck. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it just feels like an extra step for not much payoff. Curious if anyone’s found a primer that actually evens out the absorption on old wood, or is it just always a two-coat job no matter what?

I totally get what you mean about the primer sometimes feeling like a wasted step. I’ve tried a few brands—Zinsser BIN worked best for me on old, uneven wood, but even then, I still needed two coats of paint for a really crisp finish. Maybe it’s just the nature of older trim? I’ve never had “one coat” actually live up to its name, especially in bright light.

That’s been my experience too. Even with high-end “one coat” formulas, the coverage just isn’t perfect—especially if you’re dealing with older wood that’s got a lot of texture or previous paint layers. I’m curious, has anyone tried sanding down the baseboards first to see if that helps the paint go on smoother? Or is it more about the paint quality than the prep work?

Honestly, I think prep work matters more than the paint itself. I’ve sanded baseboards down to bare wood before and still needed two coats, even with the pricier brands. Maybe it’s just marketing hype? Or maybe my expectations are too high...

I hear you on the prep work. Honestly, I think the “one coat” thing is mostly wishful thinking, especially if you’re covering anything darker or patchy. Even with low-VOC or eco-friendly paints, I’ve never gotten away with just one pass unless it was a touch-up on white over white. Marketing loves to promise miracles, but baseboards are stubborn... and they show every brush mark. I’d rather do two thin coats and call it a day than try to glob it all on at once.
