Comparing Window Insulation: Double vs Triple Glazing

- Totally agree that triple glazing gets hyped up way more than it needs to be for most houses. Seen plenty of people drop big money on it, but then forget about the gappy loft hatch or a thin internal wall. It’s like putting a vault door on a tent.

- For sound, I’ve had better luck focusing on the “weak spots”:
- Solid-core exterior doors (even just swapping out an old one makes a huge difference)
- Acoustic seals around frames
- Upgrading vents—acoustic trickle vents are a game changer if you want fresh air without the city outside joining you for dinner
- Heavy curtains help too, especially at night

- On ventilation, yeah, MVHR is brilliant but can get expensive and feels like overkill in smaller flats. I’ve seen some smart retrofits with demand-controlled extractors and well-placed passive vents instead. Keeps air moving but doesn’t turn your place into a wind tunnel.

- Double glazing with proper installation and attention to gaps probably gets most people where they want to be. Unless you’re in northern Sweden or something, triple’s more about energy than noise.

- One thing I’d add: window spacing matters for sound. If you do go for triple glazing, make sure the panes aren’t all the same thickness—mixing it up disrupts different frequencies better.

- Oh, and don’t underestimate landscaping. I planted a hedge out front and it genuinely took the edge off traffic noise more than I expected.

It’s all about finding the right combo for your space—no single product solves everything. Sometimes it’s a patchwork of little fixes that add up to a big improvement.

Totally with you on the “vault door on a tent” analogy—cracks me up because it’s so true. I’ve seen folks obsess over window specs but ignore the ancient floorboards or leaky letterbox. Honestly, heavy curtains and a decent rug can sometimes do more for comfort than another pane of glass. And yeah, hedges or even a row of big planters can soften street noise way more than people expect. It’s all about layering those fixes, not just banking on one big upgrade.

Title: Comparing window insulation: double vs triple glazing

Totally agree about layering—sometimes it feels like people get tunnel vision about windows and forget the rest of the house is leaking air like crazy. I’m curious, though: for those who’ve actually upgraded from double to triple glazing, did you really notice a difference in comfort or bills? Or was it more about peace of mind? I keep hearing mixed things and don’t want to drop a ton of cash if it’s just a minor upgrade.
