Need advice: professional mediator or DIY mediation?

I'm stuck in a bit of a family disagreement right now—nothing too dramatic, but enough that it's getting awkward at gatherings, you know? I've been thinking about either hiring a professional mediator to help us sort things out neutrally, or just trying to handle it ourselves with some structured conversations. Mediators seem helpful but pricey, and DIY could save money but might get messy. Has anyone tried either route and found one better than the other?

Have you considered maybe bringing in someone neutral but not necessarily a professional mediator? Like a trusted family friend or someone everyone respects? I've seen situations where a neutral third party—someone who knows the family dynamics but isn't directly involved—can help keep things balanced without the hefty price tag. Might be worth a shot before jumping straight to hiring a pro...
