Honestly, I get the appeal of grids and string lines, but sometimes all that prep work feels like it adds more time and cost than it saves, especially if you’re working with a smaller space or just trying to keep expenses down. I’ve managed with just eyeballing sections and using a basic tape measure—sure, it’s not always perfect, but for the price, it does the job. Not everyone wants to invest in extra materials or tools if they’re just doing a quick backyard project. Sometimes “good enough” really is good enough, at least for my wallet.

I get where you’re coming from—sometimes all the measuring and stringing feels like overkill, especially if you’re just putting in a few stepping stones or a small bed. But I’ve found that even in tight spaces, a quick grid with some twine and stakes can save headaches later. One time I “eyeballed” a patio edge and ended up with this weird curve that bugged me every time I looked at it. If you want to keep it simple, maybe try marking just the corners and running a single string line for reference? Doesn’t take much time or money, but helps keep things looking sharp.
