WHEN “SMART” DEVICES AREN’T SO SMART AFTER ALL

It’s not about ditching smart tech altogether, but making sure it doesn’t leave you stranded. A little planning goes a long way... and honestly, sometimes the “dumb” version is just fine for certain things.

That’s a really solid point. I’ve seen too many homes where every light switch and outlet is “smart,” but then a simple network hiccup means nothing works as intended. There’s something to be said for keeping things simple - especially when it comes to critical systems like heating or security.

From a sustainability perspective, I’d also add that not every smart device is created equal in terms of energy efficiency. Some of these always-on gadgets can actually draw more standby power than their traditional counterparts. It’s worth checking the specs before swapping everything out.

One thing that’s worked well for me: using smart plugs only where they make a real difference, like with hard-to-reach lamps or appliances on timers. For the rest, old-school switches are just less hassle. Sometimes, the greenest solution is the one that doesn’t need an app at all...

Couldn’t agree more with this. I’ve worked on projects where clients wanted everything automated, but honestly, there’s a certain charm - and reliability - in a classic dimmer or a pull chain. Do we really need an app to turn on the porch light? Sometimes I wonder if we’re designing for convenience or just adding layers of complexity. I love tech, but I always ask: does it actually make life easier, or just more complicated?

Title: When “Smart” Devices Aren’t So Smart After All

I get the appeal of smart everything, but honestly, half the time I’m just troubleshooting WiFi or waiting for an update to finish. There’s something to be said for a light switch that just… works. I’ve seen clients get frustrated when their “smart” blinds won’t open because the app crashed. Sometimes, low-tech is just less stressful. Not every problem needs a digital solution, right?

- Been there. Last year, we put smart thermostats in a new build. Looked great on paper.
- First cold snap, half the units glitched out. Tenants couldn’t adjust heat - had to send someone out just to reset the system.
- Old-school thermostats? Never had that problem.
- I get the convenience angle, but honestly, reliability matters more when people just want their place to work. Sometimes “dumb” is smarter.

Couldn’t agree more, but I’ll admit I got sucked into the smart gadget hype too. Installed a fancy WiFi dimmer in my workshop - looked slick, worked fine... until the power flickered. Suddenly, the app couldn’t find it and I was stuck in the dark, literally. Had to dig out a flashlight just to reset the thing. Honestly, a regular switch never left me stranded like that. Sometimes simple just wins, especially when you’re elbow-deep in drywall dust.
