- Had a similar moment last week. Our “smart” thermostat decided to update itself right in the middle of a cold snap. House dropped to 60 degrees before I could figure out how to override it.
-

“Tech’s great—until it isn’t.”
Couldn’t agree more. I love the convenience, but sometimes it feels like I’m just waiting for something to glitch.
- Still, I get why people want all the bells and whistles. When it works, it’s awesome. But when it doesn’t… yeah, crawling through a dog door sounds about right.
- Honestly, I keep a regular key hidden outside just in case. Not sure if that defeats the purpose of a smart lock, but at least I’m not locked out.
- Maybe there’s a balance? Some tech, some old-school backup. At least then you’re not totally at the mercy of a WiFi signal or random software update.

I’ve wondered the same thing about backup keys—does it kind of defeat the whole “smart” part? But honestly, I do the same. Last winter, my smart lights decided to go offline for a whole weekend. Made me question if I’m just adding more points of failure to my house. Is there a way to design these systems so they fail gracefully, or is some level of chaos just inevitable with all this tech? Sometimes I miss the days when a light switch was just... a switch.
