Anyone else feel awkward talking to their TV?

Still, these things could definitely be smarter... half the time mine thinks “pause” means “volume up.”

That’s exactly my experience too. I tried voice controls because my cheap remote stopped working (thanks, toddler and spilled juice). At first, I felt ridiculous telling my TV to “play next episode,” but now it’s just part of the routine. Still, I swear it only understands me half the time—my accent must throw it off. Remotes are clunky, but at least they don’t argue with you about what “mute” means.

I get what you mean about the accent thing—my brother has a thick drawl and his TV just gives up half the time. I’ve found that if I speak slowly and kind of exaggerate the words, it works better, but honestly, that feels even more awkward. Have you tried re-training the voice assistant? Some of them let you do that, though it’s a bit of a hassle. I still keep a backup remote handy, just in case... ever had luck with universal remotes, or are they just as much trouble?

Yeah, I totally get the awkwardness. It’s weird when you have to slow down and almost put on a “robot” voice just so your TV understands you. I’ve tried re-training the assistant on mine, but honestly, it didn’t make a huge difference—maybe it’s just my accent or mumbling, who knows.

As for universal remotes, I’ve had mixed results. Some work fine right out of the box, others are a total headache to set up and never quite do everything the original remote did. I keep one around as backup too, but half the time I end up just pressing buttons on the actual TV like it’s 1999.

Honestly, sometimes the low-tech way is just less frustrating. Makes me wonder if all these “smart” features are really saving us time or just giving us new problems to solve...

Honestly, I’ve had the same struggle. I tried using voice commands while rearranging my living room, and it felt like I was auditioning for a sci-fi movie—except the TV just stared back at me. Half the time, I end up grabbing the remote anyway. Sometimes the “smart” features just add more steps than they save. Maybe I’m old school, but pressing a button still feels faster than arguing with my TV about what I want to watch.

I get what you mean—sometimes the “smart” part just feels like extra friction. I’ve noticed that, unless I’m already sitting down and the remote’s lost in the couch, I rarely bother with voice commands. I wonder if it’s a design thing or just habit. Has anyone actually found a scenario where talking to the TV is genuinely faster or easier? Maybe I’m missing some trick here...
