What does a smart irrigation controller quote need to include?

When comparing smart irrigation controller installation quotes, is it reasonable to expect separate costs for the controller, installation, and zone-by-zone programming, or do contractors usually bundle those together?

I’d also want to understand whether rain or soil-moisture sensors are included, and how the quote handles existing valves and wiring. What zone information is most useful to provide for a meaningful estimate, such as the number of zones and what each one waters? Which site conditions tend to change the scope, and how do installers show that the programming is suited to the landscape rather than just loading a default schedule?

For the existing valves and wiring, the quote should say whether reuse is assumed and what happens if they prove incompatible. Ask for any replacement work to be listed separately, or for the quote to explain how that extra cost would be approved and priced. That keeps the controller installation price distinct from contingent repairs.

For the zone details, ask the installer to show the proposed watering days and run time for each zone alongside what it waters and the plant or turf type. That makes it easier to see whether unlike areas are being treated alike and whether the schedule reflects the landscape rather than a default.
