If you had to rig up your own home security on a tight budget, what would you do?
I’m with you on the “lived-in” look - my neighbor’s place is spotless and always empty, and he’s had two break-ins. Meanwhile, my porch is a mess of boots and mismatched chairs, and nobody’s bothered me. I’ve also used those motion-activated solar lights, but I rigged them up with old bike reflectors to make them look brighter (probably overkill, but it was fun). Has anyone tried using native plants or thorny bushes under windows? I’ve read that dense landscaping can be a real deterrent, but I wonder if it’s more hassle than it’s worth.
Dense landscaping does help, but it can be a bit of a pain to maintain - especially if you’re dealing with fast-growing native species. That said,
I’d say it depends on your climate and how much yard work you’re willing to take on. The idea of using thorny bushes is solid, though; I’ve seen folks use holly or even roses under windows for that extra layer of “don’t climb here.” Just watch out for overgrowth - you don’t want to end up with a jungle you can’t control.“dense landscaping can be a real deterrent, but I wonder if it’s more hassle than it’s worth.”
I hear you on the maintenance headache - fast-growing stuff can get out of hand quick. But honestly, I think dense landscaping is only part of the puzzle. If you’re on a tight budget, I’d lean heavier on lighting and simple motion sensors. Even cheap solar lights along the perimeter make a difference. Landscaping’s nice for slowing people down, but it’s not gonna alert you if someone’s poking around at 2am. I tried thorny bushes once and spent more time trimming them than they were probably worth... ended up swapping most out for gravel beds under windows instead. Less hassle, still keeps folks from sneaking close.

Totally get what you mean about the thorny bushes - those things are a pain, literally and figuratively. I tried roses under my front windows once thinking I was clever, but between the scratches and the constant pruning, I gave up after a year. Gravel is way less work and you can actually hear if someone’s crunching around out there at night.
Lighting is underrated, honestly. I put in some of those cheap solar path lights and even though they’re not super bright, they make it way less appealing for anyone to lurk around. I also grabbed a couple of those stick-on motion sensor lights for the side yard - nothing fancy, but they do the trick.
One thing I’d add is fake cameras. I know they’re not real security, but sometimes just seeing that little red light blinking is enough to make someone think twice. Not perfect, but on a budget, every little bit helps.

You nailed it with the lighting - people underestimate how much just a little visibility can deter someone. The fake cameras idea is clever too. Ever tried those window alarms that stick on and make a racket if the window's opened? They're surprisingly cheap and loud.
